Oncology

Oncology and Palliative care is an area none of us want to think about. Unfortunately, most of us are touched by the loss of someone who has suffered with some form of cancer.

Acupuncture is a commonly used treatment in many areas in this field, but it IS NOT a cure for cancer.  It can help in post-operative pain management; help with the side effects of both surgery and treatment. It can be used to help fatigue and boost energy levels while having chemotherapy or after treatment has finished.  It is used alongside, and complements many western medicines. Both the British Acupuncture Council and Cancer Research recommend its use in this area.

It is mainly used to help relieve sickness and nausea from the chemotherapy and other cancer drugs.  It can also help with the symptoms of a dry mouth, feeling breathless and hot flushes.  People also often report it helps them relax and improve their overall feeling of wellbeing. Acupuncture can also help with pain management, especially after other treatments are no longer available.

Massage traditionally has been unable to be offered during this time. However with recent advances in medicine and the provision of specialist training courses, Jennie is now qualified to offer a relaxing massage, know as 'light touch massage' to active cancer patients. Consent forms are still needed, but when you're having a really bad day, this should help make it better, even if its just for that hour.

Palliative care can be aided by helping the patients to relax and give them the energy they need to carry out their final wishes.

Throughout the treatments, patient care is at the foremost of Jennies mind when treating in this area.  We ensure they are comfortable and warm and well respected.  If relatives want to be present they can be. Treatment for the relatives is also an important part of this.  The treatments can help with their emotional state on many levels, helping them to deal with what their current situation presents.   In some circumstances we can also offer to teach the patients how to self-treat at home.
